The presence of the Franciscans in Tui dates back to 1642 when the friars of Saint Diego of Salvaterra abandoned their convent during the War of Restoration and established themselves in Tui as a result of the portuguese occupation of the town. From 1684, they received authorization to build a new convent in the city’s quarter of La Corredoira. The convent’s church was completed in 1728 with its magnificent baroque style high altarpiece influenced by the portuguese style. In 1850, when the convent was already decommissioned, it was converted in to the Council Seminary.
