The prison was built in 1611 during the bishopric of  friar Prudencia de Sandoval.  Its purpose was to incarcerate Cathedral canons who had committed serious offences, usually as a result of disputes between bishops and canons.  In this case, the Prison in Entrefornos Street was intended exclusively to incarcerate two Tui canons who were  Jewish converts – Francisco Coronel and Tomás de Leon Coronel.
